Elsevier Labs is seeking a
Sr. Technology Researcher.
Elsevier is well-known as the world's leading publisher for professionals in the scientific, technical and medical domains. We are continuing to profitably reinvent ourselves in the digital world as a global provider of information solutions to those markets. We are seeking a talented individual to help in that reinvention. The position offers the opportunity to seek out a variety of emerging technologies, to work with architecture, product, and operational groups to determine the technology's applicability to our enterprise requirements, and to experiment with them in proof of concept implementations. In addition to the technical satisfaction of working with new technologies on a variety of projects, the position offers the intellectual satisfaction of working to ensure the future value, quality and sustainability of scientific communication, and investigating the frontier of what can be accomplished using a large and varied collection of data.
You will report to the Director of Elsevier Labs. You will bring demonstrable experience in research and development of Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Semantic Technologies, Artificial Intelligence, Probabilistic Graphical Models, or similar advanced technologies.
You will also bring experience in software development using a variety of programming languages, data management tools, and specialized libraries for your advanced technology specialties. Your experience can be demonstrated through a history of presentations, publications, and by showing open source tools you have created that solve real problems for a wide range of users. You will also have a strong linguistic bent. You are multilingual, knowledgeable about Unicode, can look at the output of natural language processing tools and mark the errors they are making. You love the idea of working with other researchers and developers in proof of concept implementations and are comfortable doing the necessary manual work in creating test sets, collecting necessary word lists and taxonomies, recommending particular processing steps, so that the implementations give good estimates of accuracy and problems in scaling to production size. Ideally you will also have experience with crowdsourcing tools like Mechanical Turk and with cloud technologies such as Spark.
Ideally you are based in one of the cities where we have major operations, New York, Philadelphia, or Boston, but candidates in other locations (including home-based) are invited to apply.
You will be accountable for:
Serving as a consultant and advisor to senior IT leadership on advanced technologies (esp. open-source, cloud-based, and semantic) and evaluating their business impact through cost/benefit analysis.
Recommending and incorporating technology within long-term business plans.
Researching, collecting, and disseminating information on emerging technologies and key learnings throughout the enterprise. You will also be accountable for public presentations at conferences, publications in academic journals and the trade press, and collaborations with research partners and key customers.
Supporting research projects to identify and evaluate emerging technologies.
Interfacing with users and staff to evaluate the possible implementation of the new technology in the enterprise, consistent with the goal of improving existing systems and technologies and in meeting the needs of the business.
Analyzing and researching the process of deployment and assisting in this process.
Maintaining a strong understanding of the enterprise's IT systems and architectures.
Researching and recommending changes to architecture of major systems to adapt to new technologies.
In this growth infused role you will be tasked with:
In coordination with the Labs Director, developing your own technology specialization that feeds into company's future needs. This will involve monitoring the global developments of that technology, making presentations, and some original research relevant to the company's medium-term needs.
Working with others in developing proofs of concept to test the feasibility of the technologies for near-term product development.
Collaborating with others in Labs to assist their specializations, and to get their help with yours.
Providing quick turnaround and excellent quality results for a range of on-demand special projects from senior management, and other projects as directed.
Self-educating through MOOCs or other methods to extend your knowledge of statistics, NLP, Machine Learning, Cloud Development and Deployment, Semantic Technologies, etc.
The successful candidate will be:
A recognized expert within your present enterprise and will often provide strategic direction and guidance for the integration of products and services.
Experienced in a wide spectrum of technologies including but not limited to Java, Perl, Python; web application development including JQuery, AJAX, Tomcat, Node.js; cloud-based tools such as Spark, Hadoop; semantic technologies such as RDF, OWL, SPARQL, ontology tools such as Protégé, NLP tools like TEMIS, GATE, and UIMA, etc.
The ideal candidate will be very knowledgeable in the area of English grammar and its characteristics which can be exploited by software for advanced content enhancement and extraction. The ideal candidate will also be fluent in one or more other languages for our major markets – German, Mandarin, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, etc.
Possesses a Ph.D. in a technical field along with 4+ years of work experience. Bachelor's or Master's
Degree in a relevant field of work, with 7+ years of work experience, are also invited to apply.
