As a member of the Decision Support Team, the Sr. Data Analyst works within the Office of Information Technology as part of the Decision Support Team. The position requires a hands-on technical data and analytics expert with programming and advanced analytical skills alongside a demonstrated ability to quickly build, review, assess, validate and reverse engineer, and optimize complex SQL for accuracy, consistency, efficiency and speed. In conjunction with decision support team members and data warehouse engineering staff, this position will create aggregate tables, stored procedures and views for standardized metrics, use SQL , PostgreSQL and MDX against Oracle databases and an Amazon RedShift data warehouse.
Will have primary responsibility for technical data deliverables including work estimates, detailed and technical design documentation, completed reporting projects as well as underlying data structures and associated documentation.
Develop, debug and test a range of simple to very complex queries, reports and scorecards based on user requirements and input from subject matter experts.
Support all phases of the software development lifecycle, including Requirements Gathering, Analysis, Design, Testing, Implementation and Production support for reporting systems.
Understand the development needs of our various client constituencies establish a positive, service-oriented relationship that involves clearly owning, resolving and communicating issues and problems and being responsive to needs, requirements and deadlines for estimates and completed reports.
Responsibility for acting in accordance with and complying with all departmental and organizational policies particularly in relation to compliance and risk management.
Manage and successfully execute projects/initiatives assigned. Contribute to project planning and work with decision support team members to gather requirements, suggest additional avenues of analysis, consistently and accurately conduct technical analysis while ensuring alignment of data deliverables to expectations.
Maintain high standards of quality by developing effective operations procedures and system documentation.
Other duties logically associated with the position may be assigned.
Bachelor’s degree (preferably in Computer Science, Information Systems or similar technical discipline) plus substantial experience similar to the job responsibilities of this position is required.
Four or more years proven experience creating and constructing complex queries in structured, semi-structured, and unstructured databases (such as SQL Server, Oracle, MongoDB, Hadoop, etc) with at least 2 years working within a higher education institution.
Extensive use of business intelligence platforms (such as Pentaho, Business Objects, MicroStrategy, Cognos) for the purposes of creating reports, dashboards and scorecards.
Familiarity with higher education Student Information Systems (such as Ellucian Banner, Ellucian Colleague, PeopleSoft Campus Solutions) and Learning Management Systems (such as Blackboard Learn, Desire2Learn, Canvas) is preferred.
Strong experience in the performance tuning of SQL Queries and Stored procedures.
Extremely detail oriented with effective written and oral communication skills along with the ability to clearly communicate ideas to diverse audiences.
Advanced problem solving and analysis skills.
The ideal candidate is able to continually self-assess resulting data against expectations to ensure the highest levels of data quality and integrity.
Integration experience using technologies such as PERL , Python, Java, etc. is a plus.
