About the Team
The Analyst team uses rigorous analytics to generate insights that inform product, marketing and business decisions across the company, and across the idea lifecycle — from ideation to iteration to launch. Ultimately, the team’s work strengthens Etsy as a sustainable and profitable business and helps continuously improve the Etsy experience for buyers, sellers and employees.
Our team is small and agile, working vertically and horizontally across the company. Learning new skills and techniques is not only a requirement but a perk of the job; we are always looking for opportunities to improve. Our mission is to tell the story of what is transpiring in the world of Etsy — to teams, to senior management, and to the community.
We are currently divided into three sub-teams, all using a similar skill set and approach but working with different parts of the company:
The Marketing Analytics team supports Etsy’s growth efforts by analyzing our acquisition and retention efforts across channels, supporting our Merchandising and Brand teams, and working with the relevant Product teams. Example projects range from developing an in-house attribution model to analyzing and extracting insights from email experiments.
The Business Insights team leverages a deep understanding of Etsy’s business to define problems and opportunities, frame conversations with data, and provide an analytical framework for critical decisions impacting revenue and operational drivers. Example projects range from identifying the potential impact of offering new seller services to helping our Payments team better understand adoption patterns and user trends.
The Product Analytics team’s mission is to tell the story of user behavior. The team creates meaningful and impactful analyses, primarily focused on the user experience and feature usage, that informs and influences product and company strategy. Example projects range from evaluating A/B tests to examining the checkout funnel to understanding the lifecycle of our sellers.
About the Position
Partner with senior leaders to identify the problems we should be tackling, and best approach to solving those problems.
Transform raw data into meaningful and impactful analysis that influences product and company strategy. These analyses are characterized by strong data governance, technique transparency and aggressive documentation and communication.
Raise the skill level of entire analyst team through the creation of exemplary deliverables, mentorship and the introduction of better practices, processes and tools.
Help advocate for Etsy’s data-driven decision-making process internally and externally. About You
You have 4+ years experience as a data scientist or data analyst in which you extracted meaning from big data sets with little engineering support.
You have experience working with web data and you are familiar with the e-commerce and/or marketplace space.
You are an expert in sophisticated analyses and have training and experience with advanced statistical methods.
You are comfortable working independently but are a tactful and influential collaborator.
You can communicate your insights verbally, visually and in writing.
You care about reproducible work and have picked up tools to this end; you can teach others how to make their own work better and more efficient.
You are proficient in the following technical skills: SQL, Python/R, and the Hadoop ecosystem. Bonus points for additional scripting languages (Scala, PHP, Ruby, etc.)
