ABB is seeking a Research Scientist, located on North Carolina State University campus in Raleigh, NC, who will collaborate with a team of highly skilled researchers, interact with ABB businesses world–wide, and manage external relations (e.g. with universities) while participating with real data and systems to address industrial problems through leading-edge applied research.

You'll work as part of the US leg of ABB Corporate Research (USCRC), which shares worldwide research and development responsibility for several important technology areas. This role will actively participate in applied research and technology in embedded, enterprise, and cloud software architectures and systems of systems, resulting in concepts, prototypes, patents, and academic publications.

Typical duties/responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

•Perform applied research activities related to new and/or improved software architectures that satisfy customer requirements for performance, scalability, reliability, security, maintainability, and overall quality of ABB products

•Investigate the application of data mining and machine learning concepts within ABB’s customer industries, and develop prototype solutions using Big Data technologies such as the Spark ecosystem

•Envision new Industrial Analytic product and service offerings for ABB’s global businesses.

•Investigate how to tie industrial analytics concepts to the Industrial Internet of Things and cloud computing

•Develop and integrate security methods and approaches for cyber physical systems in support of ABB products and services

•Support ABB business units through consulting engagements of varying scope and duration


Basic Qualifications:

•PhD in Computer Science, Physics and/or Industrial Engineering, with research/publication track record, or MS in Computer Science, Physics, and/or Industrial Engineering or with 3 or more years of industry related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

•Creativity, initiative, enthusiasm, and results orientation to drive your inventions towards new products and services

•Deep knowledge of systems of systems and enterprise software architecture concepts and corresponding technology stacks (both commercial and open source)

•Experience building data collection and information analysis systems

•SW architecture, design, and implementation experience in multiple languages (Java, C#, Python, Scala) and platforms

•Experience in data analysis and data mining tools (R, RapidMiner, SAS, Weka, etc.)

•Broad IT/SW background and willingness to quickly acquire in-depth knowledge of new technologies and application domains

•Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently in English
