The Principal Engineer – Textiles, as a direct report to the GM of the Flex Boston Innovation Center, is a leader in fabrics & textiles with an emphasis on materials, fabrication, patterning, fuzing (lamination) and design into fashion centric products. The candidate must have hands-on technical competency, able to guide and develop core competencies for Flex’ Smart Fabric Products initiative. The candidate must comprehend the industry trends and knows the leading companies in those industries. The ‘Czar’ should also have working knowledge of various interconnecting technologies such as sewing, weaving, press adhesive and other technologies used to connect two or more fabrics. A collaborative communication and engagement style to work with customers, suppliers, peers and capabilities to manage a cross functional team is a must. Of utmost importance in this role is the instinctive ability to balance technical depth and execution to deliverables, milestones and schedule in developing fabric & textile enabling technology for standard application as well as extension into smart & connected IoT.
We are seeking a strong candidate to lead the fabrics & textile initiative, building a matrixed, cross functional team of technical experts within the current flex organization, leveraging existing flex talent, adding strategic core competencies and developing a sketch to scale framework. This position will straddle new innovation development and the transferring of technology to Flex operations for revenue generating high volume manufacturing. Apparel and Footwear are the key areas of focus.
Here is a glimpse of what you’ll do…
Responsible for developing fabric & textile leadership within Flex. The immediate responsibility will be conducting an internal gap assessment specific to materials, equipment, measurement, test and design to frame the ‘needs’ to build out Flex’ Fabric & Textile Center of Competency. Required to develop a multi functional internal team, understanding the key customers and suppliers to fulfill current and next generation solutions for apparel and footwear. With an expansive knowledge of fabric & textile technology and manufacturing, the candidate must also act as a consultant to integrating electronics into apparel and footwear with respect to materials, connection/interconnects and fabrication of textiles and fabrics inot final wearable applications.
This person will balance strategic projects and tactical activities. The initial project will be to conduct within the first 90 days of employment, an initial gap assessment of the current capabilities within the Flex footprint. Within the following 30 days, gap closure plan aligned with industry & customer trends. Post the first 120 days, develop a cross functional team (matrixed) within the Flex organization, tool set needs/requirements with justification and execution plans. Once this is in place and executing to plan, the Czar will develop a 3 year roadmap looking at all aspects of fabric & textile.
Here is some of what you’ll need (required)…
Strong background in textiles, fabrics with emphasis on related competencies in fabrication & design technologies. Advanced degree preferred.
15+ years of experience within Fabric & textile industries. Ideally has experience working with designers, fabricators and distributors in apparel and/or footwear.
Worked on product development teams that have successfully transferred technology to manufacturing
The Candidate must have strong structured problem solving skills and be versed in formal risk assessment methodologies.
Has developed roadmaps in applications, materials, fabrication preferred.
Has a deep experience in various aspects of textile, fabrics and apparel development and manufacturing.
Strong background in a multitude of fabric & textile technologies.
Proven Track record and industry recognition.
Demonstrated customer facing experience in a service oriented business.
Proven leader to foster a strong collaborative team environment
Broad global experience with customers and suppliers in Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
Relationships with leading fabricators.
Experience designing and implementing a fabric & textile operation including design tools, equipment selection, materials, wearability, and handling.
