The Director, Advanced Analytics should have proven ability to manage a highly technical team with specific responsibilities in the advanced statistical and analytic execution space and is now able to expand their influence to manage an enterprise data science organization. Their primary responsibilities include managing and growing a team of highly technical analytic professionals to achieve expected deliverables across their function, as well as manage performance of the team. This person leads the development of short and long term strategies for the Advanced Analytics Market team within Knowledge Solutions. This person will transform the strategies into prioritized initiatives for their teams and is able to respond to urgent issues in their specific function without losing focus on longer term deliverables. As a leader, this person is able to balance a wide-range of priorities and manage relationships with other enterprise departments, all the while considering short-term and long-term implications of each decision. The Director will lead internal cross-department analytic initiatives and will participate on cross-functional initiatives for Express Scripts. This person will be responsible for providing technical leadership and guidance to senior level data scientists as well as work with Knowledge Solutions senior leadership for long term analytics strategy
SCOPE OF JOB
Provides technical and strategic leadership to managers, supervisors and/or high-level professional team of 2 to 15 quantitative technical staff. Develops departmental operating models, including business, production and/organization priorities. Exerts influence in development of overall objectives and long-range goals of the Advanced Analytics Market function used across entire enterprise.
Erroneous decisions or recommendations would normally result in critical delays and modifications to projects or operations; cause substantial expenditure of additional time, human resources and funds; and may jeopardize future business activity.
Conducts presentations to senior management.
Directs a team of managers and/or high-level staff in one or more sites. Works to develop employee quantitative skills, evaluates performance, provides feedback, and oversees resolution of employee relations issues
Delivers industry-leading advanced analytic data products for Express Scripts clients and Healthcare Industry partners. Prioritizes requests and activities and develop schedules and work plans for projects/initiatives. Consults with business departments as needed. Ensures projects/initiatives are completed within designated time frames and tracks and reports progress to upper management.
Ensures quality and service standards are maintained for their function. Leads resolution of urgent and on-going problems to ensure the highest quality insights for all clients.
Communicates Express Scripts’ advanced analytic capabilities to a broad audience, both technical and non-technical. Responsible for representing advanced analytics and Express Scripts as an industry expert within the technology and innovation center (“The Lab”) and externally at conferences and client presentations
Works with Advanced Analytics Management team to analyze operations and efficiency of the group and recommend process improvements
Research, collect, review, and disseminate relevant clinical and economic scientific literature to inform research initiatives. Or gather cross-industry best in class analytics and predictive modeling techniques, discuss applicability and potential with Sr. Director of Research, and implement techniques with positive ROI. QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in quantitative or technical field (Engineering, IS/CS, Mathematics, Statistics or Operations research). Strong preference for masters-level Candidates; MBA (if they have technical undergrad or deep technical experience) and/or Masters of Science or Engineering in similar fields as undergrad education. PhD’s preferred but not mandatory.
10+ relevant years of working experience including people management, preferably 1-2 years at Express Scripts or in the PBM industry, strong preference for Candidates with direct experience managing a data science team (other industries considered)
Technical skills in analytic packages such as SAS or R, exposure to software engineering in any of the major languages (Java, C++, .NET) and experience working with or managing professionals who built or extracted data from enterprise data management systems (i.e. Oracle, SQL, Teradata) or enterprise analytic platforms (i.e. Hadoop)
Must have proven technical leadership skills, team-orientation, and a proactive and optimistic management style with the ability to lead high-talent, high-tech teams in local and remote locations; ability to motivate employees, handle difficult employee relations issues and create a culture that supports high employee morale
Thorough knowledge of advanced analytic concepts, procedures and practices, advanced problem solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively with other departments to resolve complex issues with innovative solutions
Demonstrated ability to prioritize work load and meet project deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to manage toward budget and work plan goals and experience with strategic work planning and budgeting
Ability to adapt in a dynamic work environment and make independent decisions
Strong customer service focus; excellent communication skills, including presentations and negotiations
Willingness to work a flexible schedule to accommodate project deadlines and travel occasionally
