Bring new techniques to the area of predictive modeling. Using predictive modeling, Liberty Mutual Data Scientists have significantly improved the accuracy of our insurance product pricing and the quality and efficiency of claim management in all lines of business.

Provide statistical and analytical support to the various business research teams on special projects and gather competitive intelligence.

Liberty Mutual Data Scientists make recommendations to management and bring real business value to our customers. Frequent interactions with senior management, field operations, and other quantitative and technical insurance professionals support their efforts to build robust models for continuous improvement of the organization.

Perform meaningful work in an environment that supports your growth and development through assignments in many of our lines of business. As a data science intern you will have the opportunity to:

  • Apply your academic knowledge and test your skills while working on a variety of real-world business assignments using statistical methods to translate business issues into meaningful and verifiable quantitative analysis.
  • Develop models or programs to understand and find solutions to complex business questions while working in disciplines such as product management, claims, distribution, marketing, and human resources.
  • Use statistical software such as R, SAS or Python, and techniques such as text mining, machine learning, parametric & semi-parametric modeling, to answer business problems and drive insight from data.
  • Provide technical leadership and become a subject matter expert on your project, as well as assist others with conducting business research in a hands-on environment.

Additionally, our robust programming includes opportunities to engage with our data science community through social events, past intern and manager panels, executive speaker series, exposure to various modeling teams, and training tailored to their department or project. Our interns leave with a well-rounded exposure to the insurance industry and how data science is used here.

Qualifications

  • Proven statistical/mathematical and analytical skills, as normally acquired through the pursuit of a Masters or PhD degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, or related field; applicants that have completed doctoral qualifying exams preferred.
  • A record of academic achievement and minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. Additional requirements might apply.
  • Solid oral / written communication skills.
  • Solid interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment as well as independently
  • MS Office proficiency, with Excel and SAS skills preferred; programming skills are desirable.
  • Proficiency in a statistical software package such as SAS, R, Python, SPSS etc.
